How Student Affairs Supports Students and Families:

Situations:

All 14 of the Student Affairs departments are dedicated to supporting students and their families. Explore our departments and their missions on our Departments page.

If you aren't sure where to start, you can find student resources, organized by need, on our Student Resources page. You can also contact the Vice Provost's Office of Student Affairs directly by phone at 785-864-4060.

Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities

The Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities (or "the Code") sets standards to contribute to the best environment for students to live and learn. The Code is bi-annually reviewed by the Rights Committee of the university's Student Senate.

Free Expression

One of the rights included in the Code is the right to free inquiry, expression, and assembly. More information about students' rights to protest, assemble, openly debate, and dissent can be found on Student Conduct & Community Standards' Free Expression webpage.

Campus Engagement Team

The Student Affairs Campus Engagement Team is a group of staff that serves as a liaison between the University of Kansas and student organizations hosting large or high-profile events, either planned or unplanned. Learn more about the Campus Engagement Team and how it supports students on the Campus Engagement Team webpage.

Discrimination

Students can report discrimination based on 16 protected classes (race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, age, ancestry, disability, status as a veteran, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, gender identity, gender expression, and genetic information) to the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX)

Students experiencing significant mental or physical health issues can contact Student Support & Case Management to schedule an appointment, either virtually or in-person. These case managers may assist in:

  • Transitioning back to campus after a hospitalization or leave of absence
  • Making health care referrals and assisting with appointments
  • Coordinating and disseminating absence notifications for faculty or staff

Students, staff, faculty, and family members can also submit a Support and Care Referral if they are concerned about the wellbeing of a student. These referrals are anonymous. For more information, visit the Support and Care Referral Team webpage.

KU Police Department

Students experiencing an emergency should call 911. If this emergency is taking place on campus, the KU Police Department (KUPD) will be dispatched to their location.

KU on Call

KU on Call is a program ensuring that a member of the Student Affairs leadership team is available when university offices are closed. The following members of the campus community and emergency responders have access to an assigned staff member in the event of an emergency:

  • Douglas County Fire & Medical
  • KU Police Department
  • Housing & Residence Life
  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital

These staff members are on call to provide support to students when needs must be addressed prior to the next business day. This staff member is not a substitute for trained emergency personnel such as 911, the KU Police Department, or the Lawrence Fire Department.

In the case of a student death, please contact the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs directly via email or phone. Support staff will then offer support to family members and begin outreach to members of the campus community affected by this loss. We contact faculty and staff who worked with the student and notify the necessary departments.

The University of Kansas honors students, staff, and faculty who have passed away at KU Remembers, an annual event that invites the campus and community and Jayhawk families to remember their loved ones.
