Get to know Dr. Emily Lowrance-Floyd, director of Student Affairs assessment & technology.

Q. How long have you worked in KU Student Affairs?

A. I've worked in KU Student Affairs since March 2023, but I've been around KU either as staff or as a student since 1996. Oh. That's a long time.

Q. Tell us a little about your role in KU Student Affairs. How do you make learning possible?

A. On the technology side, I help streamline the digital platforms all students use to complete annually required trainings while also administering our student case management database. On the assessment side, I'm very new but I'm eager to dive in and help our units tell their stories!

Q. What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone just starting in KU Student Affairs?

A. I would say welcome to one of the best places to work at KU! And buckle up, because you're about to make learning possible.

Q. What’s a fun fact most colleagues don’t know about you?

A. I defended my dissertation while 38 weeks pregnant. It was a race to see which came out first: a baby or a Ph.D.

Q. What do you do for fun?

A. Gardening, showing my kids cool things like Mesa Verde, and trying to develop a Nerd Nite talk about the TV show "Columbo".

Q. Do you have a favorite quote that inspires you? Please share.

A. “So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” - Gandalf the Wizard

Q. What’s your favorite spot on campus?

A. Probably the St. Andrews building on west-West Campus that used to be the Maupintour travel agency headquarters. It's adjacent to a golf course, so lots of crows and bats, and before KU switched to Pepsi, it had maybe the only vending machine with Cherry Coke Zero.

Q. What do you hope students and colleagues remember about your interactions?

A. I hope I'm remembered as helpful, knowledgeable, and reliable.
