ASRFC Members Participate in the Third Annual Jayhawk Fitness Challenge

The third annual Jayhawk Fitness Challenge was held at the Ambler Student Recreation & Fitness Center (ASRFC) on Tuesday, Oct. 13. ASRFC members were invited to drop in to challenge themselves and assess their fitness levels.

"As we developed ideas for fitness events, we wanted to offer something similar to a combine," shared Jill Urkoski, senior associate director of programs for Rec. Services. "It’s only them against themselves. It was great to be able to offer this event again and have returning students, some of which have completed the challenge all three years. Those that returned were able to see if they remained consistent or made improvements from past challenges."

This year staff supervised seven stations: forty-yard sprint, broad jump, vertical jump, overhead ball throw, plank, push-ups, and agility. Participants who completed all seven challenges received a Jayhawk Fitness Challenge t-shirt.

"Thanks to our fantastic student and professional staff, we were able to make it happen!" shared Cody Ladson, coordinator of fitness and wellness for Rec. Services. "Staff, equipment, event promotion, safety measure education, and enthusiastic energy were some of the pieces that all came together to make the event a success for about 100 participants."

Ryleigh Dyke, a graduate student from Cimarron, Kan., studying accounting and intramural sports program manager for Rec. Services, assisted with score keeping during the event.

"The people competing were cheering each other on along with the student staff encouraging them to keep going even when they felt finished. I think they wanted to try something new and test their abilities which helped them get out of their comfort zone."

"My experience working with Rec. Services has been nothing short of amazing." shared Dyke. "Every day I feel nothing but support and encouragement from my supervisors and fellow colleagues, which makes work even more enjoyable."
