Adrienne Reyes Named KU Student Affairs August 2026 Employee of the Month

Adrienne Reyes, complex director for Ellsworth Hall in Housing & Residence Life (HRL), has been named the KU Student Affairs August 2026 Employee of the Month!

“I started working in HRL in July of 2022 as an assistant complex director when I was in the Higher Education Administration Graduate Program. When I graduated, I was rehired in June as a complex director. I’m just starting my third year at Ellsworth.”

In her role, Reyes manages the daily operations of Ellsworth Hall, supporting 579 students pursuing their degree. She also supervises a full-time hall coordinator and undergraduate staff serving as resident assistants. In addition to caring for residents, Reyes is a live-in complex director in the community she serves.

“Ellsworth has a special place in my heart. This is where I first started as a graduate student, and I feel like my memories tie into the hall and the people who worked here at the time. I had a really great year with my first supervisor.”

Reyes fondly recalled many of the past residents and supervisees she has kept in touch with over social media, beaming with pride.

“I love the supervision and mentorship aspect, but I thrive with project management and seeing an idea grow. I got to participate in planning Chill on the Hill this past year with two other complex directors. We normally give out prizes to students. I thought about what it would look like if we reached out to our Lawrence community to see if people wanted to donate. Many were able to, and I was just so happy to have their support as a community.”

Reyes's colleagues have noticed her investment in the success of those in her community, and her eagerness to celebrate those successes. In addition to completing the expected responsibilities of her role, she supported two staff members in acquiring their driver's licenses by accompanying them while they practiced and drove them to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to take their exams.

"Her care extends beyond her workplace responsibilities," shared Jacque McKenna, director of housing services. "Adrienne's approach reflects a genuine commitment to the holistic well-being and success of those around her."

While Reyes appears to take everything in stride, she shared some challenges as well.

“You have those days where you are dealing with something difficult. It hits sporadically. We’re on call the whole year, including the summer. But students are finding their footing and getting used to what university life is like. It ebbs and flows.”

To take time for herself, Reyes is intentional about reaching out to friends and going to a movie or a workout class, or even volunteering.

“I make sure I’m taking care of myself. Making sure I’m getting enough sleep, that I’m eating, and if I’m overwhelmed I talk to my supervisor to see how we can navigate that. My department is really good at showing up for each other.”

Adrienne, KU Student Affairs recognizes and celebrates your efforts, commitment, and valuable impact on the KU community. Thank you for all you do to make learning possible!
