Counseling and Psychological Services establishes new Peer Community Space

LAWRENCE — In collaboration between KU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the KU Memorial Unions, the new Peer Community Space has opened in Room 452 of the Kansas Union.

“We are excited and proud to announce the opening of our new satellite space in the Kansas Union,” shared Outreach Coordinator Eric Lowery, a licensed specialist clinical social worker at CAPS. “The space is now staffed by HOPE@CAPS Peer Educators who are there to provide support to any KU student.”

HOPE@CAPS is a group of students who are dedicated to reducing mental health stigma and helping their peers connect to mental health resources. These NASPA-certified peer educators lead drop-in and one-to-one listening sessions, workshops, and community building events in the Peer Community Space during operating hours. The new space is complete with games, coloring books, fidget toys, massage chairs, and other stress-busting amenities.

“Our new Peer Community Space in the Kansas Union is all about creating a Healthy and Vibrant Community that Makes Learning Possible,” shared Dr. Chris Corbett, the director of CAPS. “We could not be prouder of the new space, but we are also equally thankful for the partnerships that made it possible! Rumor on the street is that it’s got some really good vibes, but don’t take my word for it.  Come check it out for yourself!”

Other CAPS events and skill workshops — focusing on topics such as managing anxiety, stress, focus, and relationships — will also be hosted in the Peer Community Space, adjacent to the Alderson Auditorium. Student organizations and University of Kansas units interested in booking the space can contact Eric Lowery for more information.
